Shrek screams "GET OUT OF MY SWAMP" to the side of his swamp with the big bad wolf, three little pigs, donkey, ad three blind mice in the background.

GET OUT OF MY SWAMP!- Going green this Earth day with Shrek

Did you know Shrek was released on April 22, 2001? Do you know what else is celebrated on April 22? Earth day. Yeah that's right this post is all about the celebration of Shrek and our world... or just Shrek, cause you know, Shrek is love Shrek is life = Shrek is the world.

Yeah that's right this post is all about the celebration of Shrek and our world... or just Shrek, cause you know, Shrek is love Shrek is life = Shrek is the world.

Specifically, this post is about Shrek's world (until he met Fiona that is)...his swamp.

Fun fact, you can actually live out all your ogre homeowner dreams! Located in Scottish highlands this swamp is the perfect haven for an ogre seeking solitude.

Real life reconstruction of Shrek's swamp home.

But Swamps are not just the perfect haven for ogres. Another fun (and important) fact is Swamps are havens for so many creatures! Check out the gallery below to learn about the awesome wildlife that call the swamp home sweet home.

Swamps are a type of wetland. Seperating swamps from other wetlands like marshes and bogs is the presence of woody plants...like Shrek's stump!

These woody plants aid swamps in their super power of purifying the surrounding water! By absorbing excess nitrogen and phosphorous from agricultural run-off the plants purify the swamp water. Chemicals that cannot be absorbed are buried beneath sediment at the bottom of the swamp.

Cartoon trees absorb nitrogen and phosphorous from agricultural run off.
Nitrogen and Phosphorous from agricultural run off is filtered and absorbed by swamp plant life. Non-absorbable pollutants and chemicals are buried in sediment beneath the swamp. Therefore, swamps act as nature's very own water treatment plant!

Another super power of these woody plants? The ability to turn green. And I'm not talking about ogre's any more. I'm talking green as in *ca-ching* green 🤑.

That's because swamp environments are 'perfect' for the preservation and transformation of dead plants into coal!

What comes out, must first go in. Swamps being major coal deposits are therefore great carbon sequesters! Meaning swamps help lower the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. With less atmospheric CO2, global warming slows.

So whether it be for the biodiversity of swamps, their purifying abilities, or their fossil awesomeness, I hope you will join me in going Ogre-green for our planet this Earth day.

Shrek is screaming "Listen up to how to protect our swamps" with a sign that say sEncourage the development and enforcement of laws and regulations that disincentivize destruction of coastal wetlands. Support organizations working to protect coastal wetlands around the world.

This post stemmed from getting to see Shrek 2 in theaters for its 20th anniversary! I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know how you celebrated our beautiful and mysterious Earth in the comments below! As always, stay curious. ~Bree
