Best pizza in D.C.? and surrounding gems

It was a quick and awesome weekend get away and I ended up eating in 3 different states!

Virginia:

I was very excited to return to Guapos.

I loved their fresh pressed tortillas and quail. And this visit's food (and drink lol) was equally as amazing.

The only thing different about this visit was the place was lively and bustling, while last visit was quiet. Probably due to a difference of a Friday night vs an odd time during the middle of the week lol.

With the restaurant so busy they even had employees 'on-stage' making the fresh pressed tortillas which was really fun to see!

The eats:

Guapo's gives each table free unlimited chips with a side of salsa and a spicey dipping sauce. But we also had to get queso... It was okay. The least impressive of everything at Guapos. Not the most flavorful nor spicey queso. It was interesting it came with thicker corn tortilla chips.

The salsa with the free chips was the best salsa EVER because there was basically 0 tomatoes, all onion and juice lol. Liked the spicey jalepeno dip which was bean free! Free chips 9/10 ⭐, queso 6.9/10 ⭐'s just because I had better at quite a few places.

A testament to how good a Mexican restaurant simply includes Margs. I started off with pineapple and Alix got Blackberry. Both on the rocks.

First thought's- "THIS MARG IS FIRE" perfect pineapple taste. 9.8 ⭐'s
Al not fire marg 👎 5/10 ⭐'s.

And then there is the main course, which, of course, had to be the quail. I'm sorry but you have quail once and there is no turning back. It's simply too good AND unique of a food to consider anything else. And it comes with the fresh pressed tortillas. So clearly it's a winner.

My second drink was a frozen passion fruit margarita. It was pretty but not as good as the pineapple.

Quail fajita- The quail tastes like all the best parts of a chicken. Tender and juicy and nicely charred. The basic fajita elements are elevated by quail and pillowy soft and warm tortillas (which you can request more of free of additional charge). 9/10 ⭐'s The passion fruit marg has good texture but flavor is like a mango with a weird after taste. 6.9/10⭐'s

Washington D.C.:

Next up, il Canale in Georgetown, D.C.. I was especially excited for this restaurant as it has won awards for being one of the best restaurants in the world and is ranked #40 for best restaurants with a pizzeria in the U.S.

The restaurant recognizes its fame with walls filled with pictures of celebrities visiting the restaurant and news of the restaurants success.

I accompanied my best friend's family to this restaurant. For appetizers they ordered: Prosciutto e Melone, Bruschetta, and Caprese. Personally, I am not a fan of elements in each of these dishes, but enjoyed the parts I did try. As I didn't try the full appetizer I will not be ranking these foods.

Proscutto is really good and I liked the mozarella cheese sphere of the caprese. Nothing extraordinary about these dishes. Pretty presentation.

For the main meal, my indecisive brain was grateful and excited that Mr. Flynn suggested getting a pizza for the table! (even though it ended up just being me and him eating it lol). At the waiters suggestion that Diavola was the best pizza we ordered that.

With pizza ordered I was able to request the lobster ravioli which was the featured image in many of il canale's 'best restaurant' newsletters.

Graduation weekend (and maybe a prom weekend based on guest's attire) may have been overwhelming to staff. Our waiters were nice but not personable and very short in responses. There were also quite a few missing foods from some of the meals my table modified due to allergies.

Diavola pizza pictured the furthest back to the left. Pizza had such good spicey pepperoni. The crust is thin, tough, and charred. Almost kin to the pizzeria in Italy in Disney's E.P.C.O.T. lol 9/10⭐'s.
Lobster ravioli- Let me just say I was disappointed. Tasted like costco's lobster bisque which is a little too rich and sweet. Disney's lobster bisque from France is better and that says something. Good thing we got the pizza. Too be fair the pizza was ranked their best dish and some other reviews had commented the lobster ravioli was subpar. 6.9/10 ⭐'s

Maryland:

On our way back to New York I was in charge of choosing a restaurant. A lot of pressure on someone as indecisive as myself lol. After a quick skim of google reviews and a craving for food I have not had in a while, I chose The Lime Chicken.

Long story short, I struck a homerun! Located in Urbana Maryland, the surrounding town place was adorable. We then had the most incredible guest service experience thanks to our waiter Navi! The food and the service was so good Alix ran out to the car to grab cash for an extra tip and I wrote my first google review!

Lime Chicken Pollo is notably a takeout place with limited seating and the food being served in to-go containers. Which may explain why Navi was so quick to provide us with on-the house spicey potatoes while we waited for our food to be ready!

Navi also performed excellent service by checking in on us and asking if we needed anything. It was also cool to see his own passion and pride for his restaurant. Navi looked for insight in which of the homemade sauces we liked best, and when I requested the sides be changed of a dish he provided the requested sides free of charge so I could try the dish as it is traditionally prepared!

SPICEY POTATOES WERE SO HOT SO WARM AND SO SPICEY!!! 9.7/10 ⭐'s

The main dish I got was the Pollo Saltado. This peruvian chicken dish traditionally comes with white rice and fries.

The menu was filled with so many tempting sides it was difficult to choose. Luckily Alix ordered a separate side of yucca fries since Yucca are bomb! And the sides I had requested were brussel sprouts and arroz chaufa (fried rice).

this dish came out STEAMING! so hot and the meat and veggies were so tender and jicy, perfectly sauteed! I don't think I personally like the traditional base of fries and white rice as the fry became soggy and I don't really like plain rice. 8/10 ⭐'s
I LOVE YUCCA! These were crispy and espescially good dipped in homemade sauce (the white sauce was best imo). 9.5/10 ⭐'s.
Bomb brussel sprouts. Nice and crispy yet didnt feel heavily oiled! Paired nicely with the homemade sauces. 9/10 ⭐'s
Very good fried rice! mixed it into my pollo saltaldo and the meal was elevated to top tier! 9/10 ⭐'s (when mixed).

So was the best restaurant really the best? I think I personally enjoyed what Virginia and Maryland had to offer. However, the pizza at il Canale was pretty darn good. I guess the reviews did say best restaurant with a pizzeria after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Enjoyed this post? Let me know by voting on the poll! And as always, stay curious. ~Bri
