The Best Chinese Food in Elmira, NY

Spring Break, 2022

This isn't my first time visiting Beijing Garden. When Alix suggested it as our meet up point I immediately remembered the restaurant. Yes, they are that good!

Bri's dad is at the head of the table then Alix and Bri and Bri's two sisters sit on opposite sides. On the table is a platter of traditional Chinese appetizers.

Now you may be wondering, what the heck is that in the last photo? Let's take a closer look sha'll we...

The pu pu platter is served with traditional chinese appetizers and there is a live flame in the center.

THAT, my dear friends is the pu pu platter. Not to be confused with doo doo platter, because this dish is the precise reason why I remembered this place.

And yes, that is a live flame you can cook some of the apps over! The first time I saw this appetizer I never experienced Japanese or Korean BBQ before so I thought the self-cooking was a very unique feature.

I will say the second time around I was less impressed with this dish. But its still a fun presentation and most of the appetizers included are a great variety and most of them were pretty decent. Based off the display and the flavor profile I would give this dish a strong 8.3/10 ⭐s. It's definitely a fun starter I'd suggest getting at least once!

What really blew me away taste-wise this time around was the main dishes.

The korean BBQ meat is cooked over the mini fire of the pu pu platter.
The chicken and shrimp tempura were both very good, especially in the duck sauce provided with the fried noodle chips. The fried wonton could use more meat to wonton ratio and was very dry. The Korean BBQ was very fun to roast over the platter's fire. The shrimp eggroll and BBQ rib were pretty decent and good staples for the price of the platter ($7.95 per person).

Beijing Garden has a large variety of Szechuan and Hunan dishes so its likely everyone will be find something they would like. The trick is knowing what you like. I was honestly not that impressed with my meal the first time I came here. But that's because, while the meat and vegetables were cooked excellently, I had ordered a dish with white sauce. I like to be adventurous and try new things when I go out and through this I have discovered I prefer dark sauces when it comes to Chinese food. Meaning, there is personal preference that comes into play when judging a meal's quality, so try and go with something you're pretty sure you will like! And this time around I was astonished at how good this restaurant's cuisine is, Dad and Alix also gave me a bite of each of their dishes (also in dark sauce)!

Overall (well mostly my dish and Dad's cause I could just tell from that bite) I would give the meals a solid 9.8999/10 ⭐s. P.S. I forgot to mention that this restaurant serves free tea with your meal, so you should definitely go.

P.P.S. There is cool art work in the surrounding area. They even painted Alix on the side of a building!
